Okuama-Ewu residents, particularly mothers, left in shock as they find their homes destroyed upon return from displacement

Many residents of Okuama-Ewu community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State were left devastated as they returned to find their homes shattered, following the departure of the Nigerian Army from the embattled riverine settlement. The community, which had been displaced and sought refuge elsewhere, witnessed heart-wrenching scenes as residents, especially mothers, collapsed upon seeing the level of devastation.

Vanguard’s visit to the area revealed that some residents’ blood pressure surged, requiring hours to stabilize.

A Scene of Despair and Loss

Sixty-five-year-old Maria Adam, who fled Okuama-Ewu on March 15 and returned on May 8, recounted her shock: “On arrival when I saw the level of destruction, I fainted and was revived because I suffered hypertension. I lost eight basins loaded with wrappers, all burned, and my 20 crates of minerals (soft drinks) destroyed, including the building.

I am confused about starting all over again and I call on the government to come to our aid.”Similar stories of loss and despair echoed across the returning villagers.

Mrs. Vero Joseph, a 68-year-old farmer, expressed her distress: “On arrival at the community and seeing the devastation, I fell terribly sick; nothing is left here. They destroyed everything, including our houses, utensils, and clothes. To start life afresh is the only way, which is going to be difficult.

A Call for Aid Amidst Uncertainty

Despite the challenges, residents like Mrs. Joseph find solace in returning to their hometown: “However, coming back to my home is better than going back to the bush. This is our hometown and we are pleased to be back home.

“The situation is dire, with residents resorting to sleeping in the Anglican Church and the empty jetty. The lack of basic necessities such as food and cooking utensils adds to their hardship.

They call on the government to intervene and provide aid, as they attempt to rebuild their lives amidst the ruins.

Looters Add to the Misery

Adding to their plight, looters took advantage of the army’s departure, raiding the community and further exacerbating the residents’ suffering. Despite catching some looters, the residents have received no assistance from the state government’s Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) committee.

A Glimmer of Hope Amidst Desolation

Despite the overwhelming challenges, residents like 20-year-old Solomon Kennedy, a Senior Secondary School student, express hope for a better future: “I feel good coming back but the soldiers have destroyed our houses and left us nowhere to stay. I prefer living in my community than the camp because this is my parents’ place.

As the community of Okuama-Ewu faces the daunting task of rebuilding, they appeal for support and assistance to restore their lives and homes.
