LAGOS/Nigeria: The Nigerian Legion has honoured Lagos elder statesman, Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi, on his 90th birthday, highlighting his longstanding support for military veterans and his contribution to Nigeria’s struggle for democratic governance.
The celebration, held on Wednesday at the Oluremi Tinubu Hall, Yaba Local Council Development Area, Lagos State, brought together officials of the Nigerian Legion, political leaders, government representatives and associates of the nonagenarian.
National Chairman of the Council of Nigerian Legion, Ms Grace Henry, described Olusi as a father figure to veterans, recalling his willingness to intervene whenever members of the Legion faced challenges.
Henry said Olusi had consistently demonstrated concern for the welfare of veterans, noting that his interventions often went beyond verbal support to efforts aimed at resolving problems brought before him.
“Before I was even made national chairman, each time I complained to him about the veterans, Baba will take it upon himself to see that the problem was resolved,” she said.
According to her, Olusi’s commitment to veterans was among the reasons the Legion considered it important to honour him as he marked his 90th birthday.
Henry also recalled Olusi’s involvement in the struggle for the restoration of democracy in Nigeria, alongside other pro-democracy figures, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
She expressed appreciation that Olusi and others who participated in the democratic struggle had lived to witness the country’s continued democratic experience.
The national chairman prayed for continued good health and longevity for the elder statesman, saying the Nigerian Legion would remain appreciative of his support and contributions to veterans.
She further said the Legion was prepared to cooperate with security agencies and government authorities in promoting peace and stability, particularly during the forthcoming electoral process.
Speaking at the event, Olusi expressed gratitude to God for allowing him to attain 90, noting that neither of his parents lived to the same age.
“I thank the Almighty God for giving me the opportunity to stay up to 90. My father didn’t live up to 90 and my mother passed away at 60, so I am very grateful for life,” he said.
The celebrant also thanked the Nigerian Legion for organising the birthday celebration, praying for continued progress and greater accomplishments for the organisation.
Olusi called on Nigerians to support the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging citizens to give the government the opportunity to continue with its programmes.
Chairman of Yaba Local Council Development Area, Dr Bamidele Adefuye, described Olusi as a man whose life had provided an example worthy of emulation.
Adefuye said Olusi, who chairs the Lagos State Governor’s Advisory Council, had remained an important figure in Lagos Central and had contributed to the struggle for democratic governance.
He recalled that Olusi and other pro-democracy activists, including President Tinubu, committed personal resources to the struggle to restore democracy in Nigeria.
According to Adefuye, Olusi had become a source of counsel to many people because of his experience, wisdom and willingness to offer guidance on important matters.
He also appealed to Nigerians, particularly youths, to reject electoral violence and conduct themselves peacefully during elections.
The lawmaker representing Lagos Mainland Constituency II in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Adebola Shabi, congratulated Olusi and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to benefit from his counsel.
Shabi said his interactions with the elder statesman and consultations with him on important issues had provided useful perspectives that influenced some of his decisions.
Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Lagos State, DCG Akeem Wolimoh, described Olusi as a major supporter of the organisation, saying his guidance and assistance had contributed to its growth.
Wolimoh said Olusi had earned the respect of members of the Legion through his integrity, accessibility and willingness to listen to people and assist in resolving their concerns.
He prayed for continued good health for the celebrant and expressed the hope that Olusi would continue to enjoy the blessings associated with his long years of service and contribution to society.
Wolimoh also commended the Lagos State Government for its continued support for the Nigerian Legion and its activities in the state.
The 90th birthday celebration provided an opportunity for the Legion and other guests to reflect on Olusi’s longstanding involvement in public affairs, his support for veterans and his contribution to the democratic history of Nigeria.
