ONNE/Nigeria: In a major step toward improving access to clean water, Onne Multipurpose Terminal (OMT) has commissioned a new solar-powered water supply project in Ogu, its host community in Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The latest project, which consists of four solar-powered systems each with a 4,000-litre capacity, is part of OMT’s Safe Water Scheme launched in 2023. It builds on the company’s earlier efforts that saw the installation of three similar systems last year.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, OMT’s Managing Director, Mr. Nicolo Scannavini, said the project reflects the company’s strong commitment to corporate social responsibility and its long-term investment in the well-being of its host communities.

“Today marks another milestone in our Safe Water Scheme. These new installations will help alleviate water scarcity and encourage the use of clean, safe water in Ogu,” Scannavini said. He added that while two of the earlier installations currently require repairs, OMT has plans in place to restore them promptly.

Scannavini also expressed appreciation for the contributions of the Ogu community to OMT’s operations, noting that one of the company’s senior cargo-handling managers hails from the area.

In his remarks, Chief Lawrence Inuma, Secretary of the Ogu Divisional Council of Chiefs, thanked OMT for its continued social interventions. He said the water project would ease the burden on residents and called for more focus on youth empowerment.

“We commend OMT for this gesture. We hope to see further interventions, especially in youth employment, which is key to reducing crime and fostering development,” Chief Inuma said.

The Ogu Community Liaison Officer to OMT, Mr. Steve Davids, described the new solar-powered systems as a reliable solution to the area’s persistent water challenges.

“These installations are a game-changer. They guarantee a steady water supply regardless of power outages, and we’re hopeful more projects will follow,” Davids noted.

OMT, a leading cargo handling and logistics company at the Onne Port Complex in Rivers State, has consistently demonstrated its commitment to community development. Through various CSR initiatives, including its ongoing Safe Water Scheme and youth development programs, the company continues to drive positive change in Ogu and the wider Niger Delta region.

With this latest intervention, OMT further solidifies its position as a responsible corporate citizen and sets a strong example for sustainable community engagement across Nigeria’s maritime sector.
