Online Media Practitioners Urged to Embrace Entrepreneurial Strategies

LOKOJA/Nigeria: The President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), Maureen Chigbo, has called on online media practitioners across Nigeria to make strategic decisions that distinguish them as entrepreneurs within the dynamic and ever-evolving digital media landscape.

Speaking at the opening of GOCOP’s 8th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Conference, held at Reverton Hotel, Lokoja, Kogi State, on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, Chigbo emphasised the need for members to recognise the growing dominance of online journalism. She noted that traditional media outlets are increasingly migrating to digital platforms, affirming that online media is the future of journalism.

“We must understand that we are not just publishers; we are mediapreneurs—small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the online media community,” Chigbo told over 100 corporate online publishers in attendance.

She further stressed the importance of the AGM as an opportunity to reinvigorate members’ businesses while upholding the highest ethical standards in their practices. The conference, she explained, is aimed at equipping members with the tools and insights needed to thrive in the competitive online media space.

Reflecting on the capacity-building sessions that marked the first day of the event, Chigbo explained that the resource persons had been carefully selected from among GOCOP’s most successful members. “We have brought our members who have thrived in different areas to share their experiences, so more of us can succeed. That’s the essence of peer review,” she said. “Today is focused on capacity building, peer review, and engaging with our partners. Later, we will conduct our AGM to give account of our stewardship.”

As the publisher of Relnews, Chigbo also highlighted GOCOP’s commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR). She announced plans for members to visit an orphanage during the conference as part of their ongoing efforts to give back to society, encouraging all corporate members to incorporate similar initiatives into their annual budgets.

Chigbo expressed her appreciation to GOCOP members for their continued support and commended the government and people of Kogi State for hosting the event. She also praised the organising committee for their meticulous planning and the membership committee for maintaining high standards in screening new members, ensuring the credibility of the Guild.

One of the key sessions of the day was led by Dr Maxwell Amuchie, Founder and CEO of Sundiata Post Media Ltd, who delivered an insightful presentation titled Low Hanging Fruits: A Revenue Strategy for Online Publishers. In his presentation, Dr Amuchie outlined several practical strategies for generating sustainable revenue, identifying key opportunities such as sponsored posts, link insertions, text link adverts, and press releases. He also explored broader revenue streams, including banner adverts, special project writing, digital advertising, social media income, events management, licensing, and syndication.

Drawing from his personal experiences, Dr Amuchie advised GOCOP members to define clear business strategies and focus on creating value that attracts consistent patronage. “Despite the guidance provided by GOCOP, it is essential for members to take ownership of their revenue streams and ensure their operations align with the ethical principles of the profession,” he remarked.

The session concluded with a lively discussion among members on how to develop revenue models that respect the ethical boundaries of online journalism while ensuring business sustainability.
