Onyeme’s Scholarship Scheme Not Political, Egugbo Fires Back

Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme, FCA

ASABA/Nigeria: The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Delta State, Comrade Fidelis Egugbo, has accused Light Up Ndokwa, a socio-political group in the Ndokwa area, of deliberately targeting Deputy Governor,  Sir Monday Onyeme, FCA, and by extension, the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

In a statement personally signed and issued on Tuesday in Asaba, Egugbo said the group’s activities resembled those of an opposition political party, particularly in its criticism of Onyeme’s annual scholarship scheme.

Responding to a news report titled “Criticism Trails N150 Million Deputy Governor, Monday Onyeme’s Scholarship Scheme in Ndokwa Nation,” Egugbo dismissed the allegations as misleading and misinformed. He explained that the scheme, which has existed for nine years, cuts across the entire Delta North Senatorial District and is not limited to Ndokwa land.

“For the 2025 edition, 683 beneficiaries emerged successful in the aptitude test, with 308 of them coming from Ndokwa/Ukwuani Federal Constituency,” Egugbo clarified, insisting that the program has helped ease the financial burdens of parents and students across Delta North.

He faulted Light Up Ndokwa’s claim that Onyeme was “recycling people’s money to buy political relevance,” stressing that the scheme draws support from individuals, corporate bodies, and NGOs in addition to the Deputy Governor’s contributions.

“Education remains the best solution to poverty,” Egugbo said, arguing that anyone downplaying the value of scholarships was either uninformed or unwilling to acknowledge the role of education in community development. He also questioned the identity and credibility of the group’s leadership, particularly its secretary, Mr. Endurance McGregor Erhunmwunse, whom he described as “a very foreign name to Ndokwa people.”

Egugbo warned that the group could face legal consequences for false allegations, noting that respected directors, teachers, and officials of the Delta State Ministry of Education are actively involved in the process.

He maintained that Onyeme does not award contracts or control state infrastructure projects, emphasizing that the Deputy Governor’s responsibilities are well defined by Governor Oborevwori, who chose him as running mate in 2023 because of his proven track record.

Urging the public to disregard the group’s claims, Egugbo appealed to the people of Ndokwa and Delta State at large to continue supporting the Oborevwori administration, which he said remains committed to delivering good governance.
