OREROKPE/Nigeria: Major General Felix Mujekperuo (Rtd), the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, has raised a clarion call for a comprehensive education summit aimed at reigniting the passion for learning among the youth of Nigeria. The retired general, celebrated for his illustrious service in various roles within the Nigerian army and the Economic Monitoring Group, ECOMOG, voiced his concerns during a courtesy visit on Monday, hosted by Mrs. Rose Ezewu, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education in the state, and a delegation from the Ministry of Education Monitoring Team, Delta Central.
Expressing deep apprehension about the dwindling interest in education among the younger generation, the Orodje lamented the absence of deliberate efforts from parents, traditional institutions, and governments at all levels to instill the fundamental value of education in today’s youth. He underscored the potential consequences of this negligence, warning that it could lead to a continued depreciation of the significance of education, with grave repercussions for society at large.
The Orodje, a widely respected figure, emphasized the urgent need for immediate action to tackle this pressing issue. He argued that convening an education summit is imperative to not only pinpoint the root causes of the problem but also to propose viable solutions capable of rekindling the fervor for learning among young people.
The former General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 82nd Division in Enugu urged Commissioner Rose Ezewu to spearhead the proposal for a unified summit, highlighting that the future of Nigeria rests squarely in the hands of its youth.
Responding to the king’s heartfelt concerns, Mrs. Rose Ezewu assured him that the administration of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, through the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, is fully committed to making substantial sacrifices to advance the M.O.R.E agenda. Central to this initiative is ensuring unfettered access to basic and secondary education for the youth of Delta State.
Mr. Anthony Eda, the coordinator of the Education Monitoring Team in the Delta Central Senatorial District, underscored the team’s mandate during the visit. He brought attention to the troubling trend of diminishing interest in education among young people, a concern they had observed firsthand during recent school visits following the resumption of classes. Eda further highlighted the challenges faced by teachers and school principals in addressing what he described as an educational crisis.
