IBADAN/Nigeria: The Oyo State Health Insurance Agency (OYSHIA) has made significant progress by enrolling more than 60% of the intended beneficiaries into the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) scheme. This encouraging development was announced by Dr. Sola Akande, the Executive Secretary of OYSHIA, during a press conference held in Ibadan on Tuesday.
Dr. Akande further revealed that the agency has revised the enrollment target for the BHCPF scheme, aiming to accommodate an even greater number of residents in Oyo State. The BHCPF is financed through a 1% allocation from the Federal Government’s consolidated revenue, which is granted to states that fulfill specific guidelines.
Initially, the Basic Health Care Provision Fund sought to cover 37,500 individuals, including the elderly, children under the age of 5, persons with disabilities, and pregnant women across the state’s 33 local government areas. Dr. Akande disclosed that the agency has already enrolled approximately 22,018 individuals into the scheme and is actively enrolling more, with the revised target now set at 65,000 lives.
Dr. Akande emphasized that this achievement aligns with the commitment of the Oyo State Government, led by Engr. Seyi Makinde, to provide universal health care (UHC) services. The government aims to accomplish this by delivering a Basic Minimum Package of Health Services (BMPHS) and emergency medical treatment.
Furthermore, the Executive Secretary assured successful enrollees that they would have access to healthcare services without the need for out-of-pocket payments. The agency issues an ID card to beneficiaries, which serves as proof of coverage.
The primary objective of the BHCPF is to facilitate the achievement of Universal Health Coverage and improve access to primary health care services for residents of Oyo State, particularly the economically disadvantaged, vulnerable populations, women, children under the age of 5, and children in orphanages.
