UGBOMRO/Nigeria: Parishioners of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ugbomro, in Delta State, on Sunday joined millions of Catholics worldwide to commemorate Palm Sunday, with a strong message on sacrifice, endurance, and unwavering faith in God.

The celebration, which marks the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, featured the symbolic procession and waving of palm fronds, signifying honour and reverence, as captured in biblical tradition.

Delivering the homily, the Parish Administrator, Rev. Fr. Francis Oshevire, underscored the spiritual significance of Palm Sunday, describing it as a moment that reflects both the glory and the suffering of Christ.

He explained that the spreading of palms during Jesus Christ’s entry into Jerusalem was a mark of honour, as the people acknowledged Him as King, even though they did not fully understand the nature of His mission.

“Palm Sunday reminds us of a powerful contrast — celebration and sacrifice. The same crowd that welcomed Jesus with honour would later call for His crucifixion. It is a call for us to examine our faith and commitment to God,” he said.

Fr. Oshevire urged the faithful to reflect deeply on the purpose of Christ’s coming, noting that Jesus was born to fulfil God’s promise of redemption through sacrifice, not merely to live, but to die for humanity.

He said Christ’s journey to the cross was one of obedience and submission to God’s will, adding that despite facing persecution and suffering, He remained steadfast because He understood His divine mission.

According to him, Palm Sunday ushers in a sacred period in the Christian calendar, calling on believers to reflect on their lives, strengthen their faith, and remain committed to God even in difficult times.

“Jesus endured pain, rejection, and betrayal, yet He remained faithful. This teaches us that in our own lives, trials are inevitable, but we must remain steadfast because victory comes through perseverance,” he stated.

The cleric also spoke on the importance of patience and endurance in family life, particularly in marriage, stressing that challenges are part of life but should not lead to division.

He urged couples and families to build homes rooted in love, understanding, and mutual respect, warning against actions that could create instability or negatively impact children.

“Our homes must reflect peace and unity. Children should grow in environments of love, not conflict. Endurance, patience, and communication are key to building strong families,” he added.

Fr. Oshevire further encouraged parishioners to trust in God’s faithfulness, noting that just as Christ’s suffering led to glory, those who remain committed to their faith and responsibilities will ultimately experience joy and fulfilment.

“Every trial has an end. Just as Christ triumphed, we too shall overcome if we remain faithful. Let us carry our crosses with hope, knowing that God’s promises never fail,” he said.

The Palm Sunday celebration at Holy Trinity Catholic Church drew a large turnout of worshippers, who participated in the procession and mass, marking the beginning of Holy Week — a period of solemn reflection on the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ
