ASABA/Nigeria: As Delta State marks its 33rd anniversary on August 27, 2024, the founder of Peace Legend Awards International, Mr. Jesse Osero Amiri, has extended heartfelt felicitations to the people of Delta. In a statement, Mr. Amiri also expressed profound gratitude to His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Governor of Delta State, for hosting the 13th edition of the Peace Legend Awards, titled “Celebrating 50 Legends/Brands Transforming Delta State.”
The grand award ceremony is set to take place on August 25, 2024, at the South End Event Centre in Asaba, Delta State. The event promises to be a prestigious gathering, with awardees selected from various sectors, including entertainment, academia, business, banking, media, politics, professional groups, and organized labor.
Mr. Amiri emphasized that the selection of awardees is not a “Who is Who” in Delta but rather a carefully defined category with specific criteria. To qualify for the award, individuals must have demonstrated selfless commitment to the development of Delta State, particularly in the area of peacebuilding. The awards aim to recognize and honor those who have played significant roles in fostering unity and peace across the state’s diverse communities.
Reflecting on the state’s history, Mr. Amiri recalled the mutual distrust among the ethnic groups in Delta State when it was created in 1991. He highlighted the tensions between the Itsekiris and Ijaws, the Urhobos and Itsekiris, and the controversies surrounding the choice of Asaba as the state capital. These divisions led to significant challenges, including conflicts during the administrations of former Governors Olorogun Felix Ibru and James Ibori, which saw violence, insecurity, and the exodus of oil companies from Warri.
However, Mr. Amiri noted that the situation has vastly improved, with the various ethnic groups now coexisting peacefully. He attributed this progress to the efforts of the government and the contributions of eminent Deltans who have dedicated their time, resources, and expertise to the state-building process. The upcoming awards ceremony will serve as a tribute to these peace ambassadors, celebrating their contributions to the stability and unity that Delta State enjoys today.
The event is also designed to inspire others to contribute to the ongoing efforts to maintain peace and unity in Delta State, known as the “Big Heart.” By honoring these distinguished individuals, the Peace Legend Awards aim to elevate them as role models for the youth and the broader society.
In a departure from similar past events, the organizers have made a conscious effort to include women who have excelled in their respective fields, ensuring the ceremony is gender-inclusive.
Mr. Amiri concluded by paying special tribute to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his M.O.R.E agenda, which prioritizes peace and security. The Governor’s deliberate and inclusive approach has significantly reduced inter-ethnic conflicts, fostering a more harmonious Delta State. As the state progresses towards full statehood, Mr. Amiri expressed optimism that all Deltans will continue to embrace the values of peaceful coexistence, good neighborliness, and mutual respect.
