OBIARUKU/Nigeria: The traders at the Obiaruku Main Market, in Ukwuani Local Government Area will soon have a sign of relief as efforts are already completed to tackle the perennial flooding of the market which had brought untold hardship to the traders as the market is always flooded whenever it rains.
Revealing that efforts are already concluded to tackle the problem, the Executive Director Social Services Development, in the board of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas development Commission, DESOPADEC, Hon Christopher Ochor Ochor, made the statement when he paid a working visit to the traditional ruler of Obiaruku community in his palace.
Hon Ochor said the Association of Market Women, Ukwuani Chapter had earlier writing a letter to the commission, intimating him of the problem usually encountered during rainy seasons, which always lead to loss of revenues by the traders.
He said that the commission after due consideration of the request of the women through their letter deemed it fit to embark on the work to end flooding of the market to allow for free movement, which will also eliminate loss of revenues to the traders.
“After a consultative meeting the commission approved the construction of a drainage that will take the water away from the market, with a fund that will be drawn from the Ukwuani Community Relations Fund”. He said.
The Executive Director said that once the proper documentations are done, the workers will move to site to commence work on the project which will run from the market through the major road linking Obodo-Agwu Street in Okuzu quarter to the River.
He however appealed to the community to allow for collaboration between them and the contractors to allow for early completion of the project.
Reacting to the revelation, the spokesman of the community, Chief Friday Osogbue expressed satisfaction and thanked the commission for its interest to eradicating the flooding and the unhealthy condition in Obiaruku Ultra modern market which plays host to all Ukwuani people and beyond with the proposed drainage construction. The community promised total submission and cooperation with the commission both during and after the project.
The Obiaruku Ultra Modern Market was constructed without drainage system at construction and this had been a burden to both traders and those that come to the market to shop.
