OBIARUKU/Nigeria: Trouble was on Wednesday January 3, 2018 averted in Obiaruku, Ukwuani Local Government, Delta State between the supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), and the Social Democratic Party, (SDP).

NdokwaReporters gathered that the cancellation of the flag off was as a result of altercation and scuffles between some alleged thugs of the (PDP) and SDP faithfuls based on the venue of the planned event, which the PDP faithfuls claimed to, had paid for first, this resulted in arguments on who came first.

It was however learnt that after a superior argument by the SDP, the supporters of the PDP moved away, but not far from the disputed venue to hold their rally, to allow the members of the SDP to make use of the venue, which is at the centre of the town, close to the Ecobank.

According to the SDP Chairmanship Candidate, Hon Comr.) Chidi Uwabuofu he stated that the cancellation was due to the security challenges envisaged and directives from party’s state chairman.

In his words, “We regret to announce the cancellation of the SDP flag-off ceremony for the Ukwuani LGA Chairmanship and councillorship candidates. This was due to security challenges which we have envisaged,” he said.

“Earlier today, thugs from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) came to disrupt our arrangements at the flag-off venue, claiming that they had earlier paid for the same venue for an event today”.

“Even though we have confirmed this to be false, we still decided to cancel the Flagoff ceremony in the interest of peace and security, as we do not wish to put the lives of our supporters and the entire people of UKWUANI LGA at risk for our gains.”

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience that this cancellation may cause, and we appreciate you all for your unrelenting support”. he added.

Meanwhile, supporters of the SDP chairmanship candidate and sympathizers have taken to social media to condemn the act which most of them described as mean and uncivilized.
