Post Election Saga- The Struggle to Sustain Mapoly

By Kehinde Ogunyale

The aftermath result of the just concluded gubernatorial elections in Ogun state ‘might’ be a deciding factor to judge the survival and existence of the great Moshood Abiola Polytechnic.
March 9 guber polls produced Dapo Abiodun of All Progressive Congress and ‘some’ are beginning to shift focus unto the new administration subjecting the actions of the incumbent.
In the same vein, the indecision and impending crisis facing Mapoly, and the establishment of Ogunpoly and MAUSTECH might just see an ending light, if the governor-elect decides to listen to the people’s desire.
Recall that there were possible predictions that the outcome of the polls might decide the fate of the three institutions and its existence.
These predictions are not so unconnected to the alleged general believe that “the governor does more project in his own township”. Therefore, the desire to establish Ogunpoly and scrap Mapoly could only be realistic if the governor-elect is from same geographical location – Ipokia-Yewa.
Considering all possible odds and the political tussles between APC, Governor Ibikunle Amosun and his allegiance to support another candidate, it appears that governor-elect might not ‘sustain the mission to rebuild’, but take Ogun State to the ‘Next level’.
Nonetheless, The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, Mapoly Chapter, had moved quickly, requesting that the Governor-elect urgently attend to the lingering crises of the over 40-year old institution, as soon as he is sworn in May.
The union made the request during a Congratulatory visit to the Governor-Elect of Ogun state, Prince Dapo Abiodun in his Iperu home, Ogun State which was led by its Chairman, Mr Babatunde Osifalujo.
The union maintained that the birth of a university should not disturb the existence of MAPOLY which has been sustaining itself for over four decades saying, “The decision of Governor Amosun to upgrade MAPOLY to a University of Science and Technology and the creation of a new Polytechnic at Ipokia has grossly affected the only source of IGR to MAPOLY”
Dapo Abiodun, however promised to invite all parties involved in a bid to resolving all lingering issues.
In another twist, the incumbent governor of the state, Ibikunle Amosun, while preparing to handover the mantle of leadership, has strongly maintain that Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia, would be completed and commissioned before he leaves the office.
Putting in mind that Mapoly presently runs double admission in Abeokuta- National Diploma for Ogunpoly and Higher National Diploma for Mapoly, it’s assumed that if the governor could meet up with his target, students of the initial might move to their permanent site, Ipokia.
To this end, one could not firmly grant what moves would be made before or after May 29 but hope that all leads to sustain the 40 years old institution.
