Preventing Flood Is Every Body’s Responsibility, NEMA North West Coordinator Tells Katsina State Residents

KATSINA/Nigeria: The Zonal Coordinator NEMA Northwest, Mal. Abbani Garki has advised residents of Katsina State to be cautious of their environment and take precautions against flooding.

Garki gave the charge during a statewide tour on sensitization of flood prone areas on Tuesday.

Represented by Hassana Suleiman Kumo in Daura during the flag off of the tour, he told residents that they can do more for themselves than what the government can do for them in terms of flood prevention.

“Flooding is a disaster that comes with only takes of losses, with little or no known benefits, hence I urge you all to take preventive measures that would keep you safe,” he charged.

Garki explained to them that several factors are responsible for flooding, adding that however, it is preventable.

“Flood may seem like a natural disasters to many, but the fact remains that several human activities make it unavoidable.

“When you build your houses close to River banks, it is an open invitation to flooding when the rains set in and at its peak,” he said.

Speaking further, he explained that building on water ways as well as indiscriminate dumping of refuse into water channels are major culprits of flooding in settlements and communities.

He therefore, appealed to community leaders to further spread the Sensitisation message that NEMA is championing in their various domains.

The sensitization and assessment tour in Katsina State saw NEMA lead other stakeholders like SEMA, Red Cross and Fire Service   to three local government areas of, Daura, Funtua and Dutsinma from August 3 to 9, 2020.
