Prohibiting and Extortion on Land Law: Councillors Pass Motion of Commendation on Okowa, DTHA

EFFURUN/Nigeria: The Uvwie Local Government Council Legislative Arm has passed a motion of commendation on the Delta State House of Assembly and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for the enactment of a law prohibiting extortion on land in the state.

The motion of commendation was passed during the sitting of the house yesterday, Thursday, August 30, 2018.

Honourable James Emanarame, Councillor presenting Alaka/Jakpa Ward who moved the motion on the floor of the house, noted that extortion of money from developers in Uvwie Local Government Area had hindered development and brought disrepute to the area.

He therefore gave kudos to the Delta State House of Assembly for promulgating the bill and to Governor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa for assenting to the bill.

Seconding the motion , Honourable Enawore Precious, Councillor representing Ekpan Ward remarked that extortion of money by youths from developers, popularly known as ‘deve’  had discouraged most youths in Uvwie from educational pursuit and that it had caused bloody fracas amongst youths in the area.

The Leader of the House, Honourable Rotimi Obukohwo Ukwade,  while adding his voice to the motion, noted that the councillors were representatives of the good people of Uvwie and therefore stated that they would always support what was good for Uvwie also condemn what is bad in the area.

He commended the state house of assembly and Governor Okowa for the bill.

Ukwade who is the Councillor representing Enerhen Ward also warned those indulging in the barbaric act of extortion of money from developers in Uvwie to desist from it forthwith and also charged the police to be up and doing in their responsibilities of ensuing that those indulging in the uncivilized act were arrested and prosecuted in law court.

The House also in a motion commiserated with the people of Ekpan in Uvwie Local Government Area over an accident involving a heavy duty vehicle and some electricity poles, thanking God that it did not cause any casualty.

The motion however called on authorities concern to put motion in place to avoid future occurrence of such accident.

Speaking to our correspondents shortly after the sitting of the house, the Chairman House Committee on Community and Councillor representing Effurun Refinery Road Honourable Ward, Hon. Austin Akemu, noted with delight that the bill would put an end to the harassment of property developers in Uvwie Local Government Area

He expressed hope that people would be encouraged to develop properties in the area without fear of harassment from ‘ deve’ boys.
