LAGOS/Nigeria: Regnum Medical University, Anthony Village, Lagos, has received a licence from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to operate as a private university, clearing the way for the institution to begin academic programmes in medicine and other health-related disciplines.
The licence was presented by the NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, and members of the commission’s management team to representatives of the university, including Prof. Akin Osibogun, Chairman of the Planning and Implementation Committee; Akinbode Agbaoye, Chairman of the Board of Trustees; and Chuks Ochonogor, the proprietor of the university.
The institution is expected to commence with programmes in Medicine and Surgery, Pharmacy, Nursing Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Physiotherapy and Radiography.
Prof. Akin Osibogun has been appointed the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the university.
Osibogun, a Professor of Community Health and medical educator, served as Chief Medical Director of Lagos University Teaching Hospital from 2006 to 2014 and was President of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in 2022/2023.
He is a Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Physicians. He was also appointed a Distinguished Professor by the University of Lagos in January 2026.
The university’s Board of Trustees is chaired by Akinbode Agbaoye, a former Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission.
Agbaoye, who spent his career at the NUC, is expected to provide institutional and regulatory experience as the university begins operations.
According to information provided by the institution, Regnum Medical University intends to recruit lecturers and other professionals in the medical and health sciences and incorporate technology into its teaching and training programmes.
The university said its programmes would focus on developing competent health professionals capable of contributing to healthcare delivery and the strengthening of health systems in Nigeria and beyond.
It also identified the shortage of general practitioners in Nigeria as one of the challenges its medical training programmes would seek to address.
The new institution joins the expanding private university sector in Nigeria, with an academic focus centred on medicine and allied health disciplines.
