ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Government has stepped in to address the deplorable state of a critical section of the Warri–Sapele–Benin Road, awarding a ₦35 billion reconstruction contract to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).
The project, advertised by the State Tenders Board, will cover the stretch from the Spare Parts Market U-Turn in Effurun to just after Ohore Junction before Omenta Bridge, spanning Uvwie and Okpe Local Government Areas. Work on the 10-kilometre dual carriageway, five kilometres on each side—is expected to last 12 months.
Under the contract terms, the road will be expanded to a width of 11.6 metres with 2.8-metre shoulders, reinforced concrete pavement, stormwater drainage, and a durable wearing course to ensure longevity.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, through his MORE Agenda, has made infrastructure renewal and sustainable urban development a central focus of his administration. The reconstruction is expected to decongest traffic, enhance connectivity, and stimulate economic activity along one of Delta’s busiest gateways.
Although the Warri–Sapele–Benin Road falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, years of collapsed sections, crippling gridlock, and frequent accidents have left commuters and businesses frustrated. The state’s intervention reflects a determination to provide urgent relief to motorists and safeguard Delta’s position as a leading commercial hub in the South-South.
By engaging CCECC, a company with a track record in large-scale road projects, the Oborevwori administration has assured residents and road users of quality delivery. The move underscores the governor’s resolve to deliver infrastructure that drives inclusive growth, opening safer and faster access to markets, industries, and neighbouring states.
