Reopening of Ladipo Market Halted: “Safety Conditions Not Met,” Says Lagos State Government

LAGOS/Nigeria: In an unexpected turn of events, the Lagos State Government has reversed its decision to reopen Ladipo Market, asserting that the market will remain closed. Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director/CEO of Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), clarified the situation, emphasizing that the market’s closure is due to a failure to meet the prescribed safety and environmental measures mandated by the Authority.

According to Gbadegesin, these safety conditions must be met before any resumption of business activities can occur. He stressed that the primary concern is the safety of both the people and the environment within marketplaces, adding, “Reopening is contingent upon strict adherence to the safety conditions set forth by LAWMA. It is imperative that all necessary precautions are taken to prevent any potential risks.”

The LAWMA chief also mentioned that while several markets had successfully complied with the outlined safety requirements and were granted permission to resume business, Ladipo Market would be allowed to reopen once it passes the requisite safety audit. This decision was in stark contrast to the initial reopening alongside Oyingbo, Ile Epo Oke-Odo, and Alamutu markets.

When LAWMA officials arrived for the official reopening of Ladipo Market, they discovered that an essential part of the safety conditions had not been met, prompting the government to maintain the market’s closure.

For any waste management-related concerns in the area, residents are encouraged to contact LAWMA through their toll-free numbers: 07080601020 and 617.
