AGBOR/Nigeria: Residents of Ika land in Delta State have bemoaned the hike and unstable price of basic commodities, describing it as unbearable.
Those who spoke to our correspondent, expressed their displeasure over what they described as an unstable and unreasonable hike in the price of goods in the locality.
According to the Secretary of Rice Dealers Association, Ika chapter, Mr. Onyekachukwu Monye, I am worried over the way things are going in the country.
“I have been in this business for over 25 years, there has never been a time thing have gotten this bad. What we use to buy four truck load is what we now use to buy two trucks”
“Something must be done to put this country in order before it is too late,” he said.
In his remarks, a renowned transporter, Chief Shadrach Osamudiamen observed that Nigeria is at the verge of collapsing.
According to him, I can’t count how many factories and businesses that have gone out of circulation due to economic related challenges.
Speaking further, Chief Osamudiamen attributed the increase in crime rate in the country to poverty and hardship.
“To feed nowadays is a challenge for many Nigerians. If you don’t have up to a thousand naira, you cannot eat a good meal. Virtually every commodity is on the hike, this is not unconnected to the raising cases of scam and other related vices in the society”
“I am a parent and I am in position to tell you what youths are going through on a daily basis, they fight a series of temptations to stay out of trouble and crime in a society where there are no job opportunities for graduates” he argued.
On her part, a public service provider who preferred her name is not mentioned described the situation as very unfortunate.
“The civil servants are the most disadvantaged in this economic situation. Our salary is not reviewed and the system is expecting the best from us. Most us are heavily indebted, which made us to lose our respect”
“I want to use this opportunity to call on the government at all levels to look into this hash economic downturn before it escalates” she stated.
Also speaking, a health practitioner, Dr. Uche Emmanuel noted that the implications of the state of the nation is telling on its citizens.
“Many Nigerians have gone bananas following the hash economy in the country. People are easily provoked, unfriendly and angry at everything and everybody”
“You must have noticed the recent wave of maltreatment by couples, parents and caregivers on their partners or wards among other ills that is ravaging the society, are fallout of what people are going through” he stated.
