ASABA/Nigeria: In a decisive move towards economic self-sufficiency, Delta State Governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, has emphasized the pivotal role of operational refineries in Nigeria.
Governor Oborevwori, hosting the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Turnaround Maintenance of Nigerian Refineries led by Senator Ifeanyi Ubah at Government House, Asaba, underscored the potential savings in foreign exchange by curbing fuel imports.
Governor Oborevwori asserted, “When the nation stops importation of petroleum products, there would be less pressure on the naira against the dollar.” Urging swift action from the Federal Government to revitalize the refineries, he emphasized the broader economic benefits, stating, “If our refineries are working and things are going very well, it will also boost the economy of this country.”
Expressing confidence in the committee’s diligence, Governor Oborevwori assured, “I want to assure you of our support in Delta State. Any support you need to aid your oversight work, we are going to give you in Delta.”
Earlier, Senator Ubah delineated the committee’s multifaceted agenda encompassing refinery rehabilitation, combatting crude oil theft, and fostering community engagement in the Niger Delta. He affirmed the Senate’s commitment to close monitoring, asserting that the refineries would be operational before the year’s end.
Senator Ubah outlined plans for public hearings and regional visits, stressing the importance of local insights in tackling oil theft. Reflecting on challenges in implementing the Petroleum Industry Act, he emphasized the committee’s resolve to ensure its efficacy, acknowledging the complexities inherent in Nigerian governance.
