Rising Car Battery Thefts Incite Fear Among Jakpa Residents and Shop Owners

JAKPA/Nigeria: A wave of car battery thefts has left residents and shop owners in Jakpa, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, expressing their concerns and demanding action from local authorities.

Mrs. Happy Oghale, one of the victims of this disturbing trend, shared her shock and anguish after discovering that her car battery had been stolen. She recounted the unsettling incident, saying, “I parked my car opposite Ekpan General Hospital to purchase an item, only to discover that the engine of my car couldn’t start. A careful observation, however, revealed that my car battery was missing. It was quite shocking to me as I didn’t stay away for too long.”

Another resident, Mrs. Victoria Oke, narrowly avoided becoming a victim herself and credited her CCTV camera for thwarting the theft attempt. She described how three young men, wearing face caps, parked a blue Highlander Jeep beside her car and pretended to be there for repairs. She said, “Initially, I thought they were customers who wanted to make purchases, but I was surprised to see that within seconds, my car door and bonnet were already opened, and they were at the verge of making away with my car battery when I raised an alarm.”

Concerned about the escalating thefts, Mrs. Oghale and Mrs. Oke are calling on the relevant authorities, including the local government council, to take immediate measures to address the situation. Mrs. Oke stressed, “We need to be assured that these hoodlums would be curtailed as we currently live in fear.”

The rising incidents of car battery thefts in Jakpa have left the community on edge, emphasizing the urgent need for a comprehensive response from local law enforcement and government agencies to ensure the safety and security of residents and their property.
