Sabi Recycling Project Drives Green Revolution in Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Empowers Over 2,000 Residents

Grassroots action for environmental sustainability, Powered Sabi Recycling Project

IFELODUN/Nigeria: In a shining example of grassroots action for environmental sustainability, the Sabi Recycling Project has transformed communities across Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area (LGA) and Ifelodun Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State. Powered by the African Cleanup Initiative and supported by ACT Foundation, the project has become a model of how local solutions can tackle global challenges.

Since its inception, the Sabi Recycling Project has recovered an impressive 400,086 kilograms of recyclable materials, helping to rid streets and waterways of plastic waste while promoting eco-friendly practices. Beyond environmental impact, the project has directly empowered 2,130 men, women, and youths, and positively influenced over 6,000 residents through awareness campaigns, training, and community-driven initiatives.

At the heart of the project is a simple but powerful idea: that waste is not just refuse, but a resource. By teaching residents in 11 communities to sort their waste at source and embrace recycling, Sabi Recycling has fostered a culture of responsibility and resilience. The initiative enables participants to meet basic needs through recycling incentives, turning environmental care into economic empowerment.

“This project is more than about waste management; it is about creating value, fostering dignity, and reclaiming our communities,” said the African Cleanup Initiative team in a statement.

The success of Sabi Recycling has been strengthened by the active involvement of key community leaders and institutions. Figures such as Mrs. Funmilayo Ejide, Director at the Lagos State Ministry of Environment; Hon. Ismaila Sanni, Chairman of Ajeromi-Ifelodun Community Development Council; Mr. Sesan Idris, Head of Environment for Ajeromi-Ifelodun LGA; and several traditional and youth leaders have played crucial roles in driving the project’s impact.

According to stakeholders, the Sabi Recycling Project is not a one-off effort, but a growing movement. It represents a blueprint for how communities can address plastic pollution, promote climate action, and create economic opportunities simultaneously.

As the project continues to expand, it carries a resounding message: sustainability begins with the people, in the neighbourhoods they call home. The Sabi Recycling Project stands as proof that real change happens when communities come together to protect their environment and secure their future.
