UGHELLI/Nigeria: The Governing Council, Delta State School of Health Technology, Ofuoma-Ughelli has banned sales of handout or any lecture material intended for commercialisation by lecturers to students of the institution.
Chairman of the Council, Dr. (Pharm.) Nelson Ejakpovi in a meeting between the Governing Council and School Management with Heads of Departments and academic staff of the institution stated that any form of extortion, harassment of students would not be condoned.
According to Dr. Ejakpovi, “School of Health Technology has one of the most modern and best equipped e-library in the country and students should be encouraged to make use of the library, our lecturers should also, avail themselves of the opportunity to upgrade their knowledge with the library.”
“Sales of handout, printed materials for sale, including sales of textbooks have been banned in the institution; if you are a lecturer and you author a book, don’t coerce students to buy, take it to reputable book stores outside the school and sell to the public; no one should force students to buy anything to attract marks; we are here to instill knowledge and that we must do for us to achieve the desired objectives of producing graduates that can compete favourably in the provision of middle-man power for our state and beyond,” Dr Ejakpovi said.
He disclosed that the finances of the institution was affected by the recession affecting the country and challenged heads of departments to be prudent in the management of resources.
The Chairman said, “we know that recession has affected us, but, we must thank our Governor, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa for his assistance to the school; he has not only ensured that salaries are paid as at when due, but, few months ago, he directed that funds be released for the supplies of equipment and teaching aids to various departments in order to position the school to achieving full accreditation of courses of study.”
“This is the time that we have to put on our thinking caps and be ingenious in handling funds for us to make the institution better despite the financial challenges; as an institution, we must avoid harassment of our students, we must encourage them to bring out their best because, the best must be achieved for the school, the state and the society at large,” the trained Pharmacist said.
The Provost of the Institution, Dr (Mrs.) Agnes Olojoba thanked Dr Ejakpovi for the effective ways he is handling the affairs of the institution saying, “we thank the Chairman for what he is doing for our school to be among the best in the country, every decision reached by the council is in the best interest of the school and we will ensure that the programmes of the Governing Council are well executed.”
Mrs Tina Igbini of the Department of Health Information Management while thanking the Governing Council for the meeting, urged the Council to make such interactive sessions more regular as it provided opportunity for the Governing Council, Management and Staff of the institution to discuss under a friendly atmosphere.
