ABUJA/Nigeria: The Senate has formally announced the defection of Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant shift in Delta State’s political landscape. The announcement, made during a plenary session, follows Nwoko’s recent resignation from the opposition party amid internal strife.
In his letter addressed to the Senate and read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Nwoko cited instability within the PDP and the failure of the Delta State leadership to accommodate his political aspirations as key reasons for his departure. He specifically accused Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of marginalizing him, making it difficult for him to function effectively as a senator.
“After careful consideration, I have come to the conclusion that my political ideology and commitment to development align better with the progressive vision of the APC,” Nwoko stated in his defection letter. He added that PDP’s dwindling fortunes and internal crisis had left him with no choice but to align with a party that prioritizes governance and national development.
The announcement was met with a thunderous reception as Nwoko moved to the majority wing of the chamber, greeted by chants from APC senators. According to Channels TV, the atmosphere was electrified as he was welcomed into the fold of the ruling party.
Beyond his defection, Nwoko also urged the Senate to establish an ad hoc committee to investigate the deepening crisis within the PDP. He argued that a weak opposition threatens Nigeria’s democracy and called for reforms that would ensure a stronger, more accountable political system.
The defection of Nwoko is expected to have ripple effects on Delta State’s political dynamics, especially with the increasing number of PDP members shifting allegiance to the APC. His move further solidifies the ruling party’s presence in the South-South region, where the PDP has historically dominated.
With his formal induction into the APC, Nwoko pledged to work closely with the party’s leadership to advance developmental projects in Delta North, reaffirming his commitment to serving his constituents through effective representation at the national level.
