Senator Dafinone Calls for Restraint, Justice in Fresh Warri Crisis

Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Senator Ede Dafinone

ABUJA/Nigeria: The Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Senator Ede Dafinone, has appealed for calm following reports of renewed clashes between Urhobos and Itsekiris in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Dafinone described the situation as deeply concerning and urged all parties to exercise restraint, shun violence, and embrace peaceful dialogue. He also called on the Federal Government and security agencies to act swiftly in de-escalating tensions and ensuring the safety of lives and property in the affected communities.

“The Urhobos and our Itsekiri neighbours have coexisted as brothers for decades, sharing cultural, social, and economic ties that must not be destroyed by avoidable conflicts. Violence can only bring pain, destruction, and setbacks to our communities. Peace remains priceless and irreplaceable,” the senator stated.

Dafinone expressed particular concern over reports of attacks on the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) House at Okere-Urhobo, which also left some Urhobo youths injured. He condemned the incident, stressing that the UPU is not only a symbol of Urhobo heritage but also the identity of the people globally.

“An attack on the UPU is, by extension, an attack on the entire Urhobo Nation. I urge the authorities to investigate these incidents thoroughly and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” he said.

The senator further urged security agencies to remain neutral, fair, and proactive in handling the crisis, warning that bias or negligence could fuel further unrest. He emphasized that security measures must prioritise dialogue, trust-building, and reconciliation as lasting solutions to conflict.

Calling on traditional rulers, community elders, youth groups, and political leaders to join hands in fostering unity, Dafinone stressed that peacebuilding requires collective responsibility. He also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to speedily conclude the Supreme Court-ordered delineation exercise in Warri Federal Constituency, which he said would help address longstanding grievances and strengthen peaceful coexistence.

“Together, we can sustain the bonds of brotherhood and build a future anchored on justice and harmony,” Dafinone concluded.
