ABUJA/Nigeria: Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District, has called for urgent repairs to the Lagos-Asaba Expressway, specifically the dangerous stretch between Alifekide and Asaba Bridge End.
During a meeting on Tuesday, September 24, with the Managing Director/CEO of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Engineer Chukwuemeka Agbasi, Nwoko raised concerns over the deteriorating condition of the road, which he said has led to numerous fatalities. He emphasized that the hazardous state of the road poses a severe risk to both lives and property, endangering road users and affecting surrounding communities.
The meeting came on the heels of the Senate’s resumption after its eight-week recess, with the lawmaker urging FERMA to prioritize urgent repairs to this federal road.
In response, Engineer Agbasi assured Senator Nwoko that FERMA would take immediate action to address the damaged sections of the highway. He acknowledged the urgency of the situation and committed to initiating repairs as soon as possible.
In addition to his discussions with FERMA, Senator Nwoko, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), revealed that he had earlier spoken with the Minister of Works, David Umahi. According to Nwoko, the Minister confirmed that contractors would be mobilized to the site promptly to commence repairs.
“I want to take this opportunity to commend all ministers, MD/CEOs, Heads of Departments, and other government officials who are diligently fulfilling their responsibilities,” Nwoko wrote, expressing his confidence in the government’s efforts to address the critical infrastructure issue.
