AMUKPE/Nigeria: A cloud of grief and suspicion hangs over Amukpe community in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State following the mysterious drowning of a young girl simply identified as Maro.
Sources told newsmen that the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when Maro went swimming with a female friend. Panic reportedly broke out after Maro suddenly disappeared beneath the water, while her companion fled the scene under unclear circumstances, raising alarm among residents.
Only Maro’s clothes and the USB cord of her phone charger were found at the riverbank. Her mobile phone was missing, and when calls were placed to the number, an unidentified person allegedly answered before abruptly switching off the device.
The tragedy deepened when Maro’s body floated to the surface the following day, Monday, April 14, 2025. Family members and locals who recovered her remains noticed a deep injury at the back of her head. She was later buried by the riverside.
A family source confirmed that the friend who fled has been arrested and is currently assisting the police with investigations into the circumstances surrounding Maro’s death.
Efforts to reach the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, for official comments were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
