Abuja/Nigeria: The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) and the European Union are exploring areas of closer cooperation that could improve opportunities for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and young entrepreneurs in Nigeria.
The Director-General of SMEDAN, Mr Charles Odii, received the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ambassador Gautier Mignot, at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja for discussions on enterprise development, innovation and inclusive economic growth.
The engagement focused on ways to strengthen connections between Nigerian businesses and international markets, while creating opportunities for investment, skills development and enterprise expansion.
Particular attention was given to young entrepreneurs and the potential for Nigerian businesses to benefit from emerging opportunities in the green and digital economies. The discussions also considered how stronger institutional partnerships could help businesses overcome some of the barriers to accessing markets and investment.
The EU delegation also toured SMEDAN’s Common Facility Centre and workshop, where officials were introduced to facilities and programmes supporting innovation, skills development, productivity and enterprise sustainability.
The visit provided an opportunity for the delegation to interact directly with entrepreneurs and business owners. Their engagements offered insights into some of the opportunities available to small businesses as well as challenges affecting their growth.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of creating stronger links between Nigerian enterprises and businesses and markets in European Union member states, particularly as entrepreneurs seek opportunities beyond the domestic market.
SMEDAN said international partnerships remained important to its efforts to provide practical opportunities for MSMEs and young entrepreneurs, particularly in areas capable of strengthening productivity, innovation and competitiveness.
The engagement ended with both sides expressing interest in translating the discussions into practical cooperation that could support enterprise development, job creation and broader economic opportunities.
The meeting adds to ongoing efforts to deepen Nigeria-EU economic and trade cooperation, including discussions around market access, investment and development cooperation.
