SPP, SEB To Train 40 Abuja Schools In Climate Education Drive

Students receive Climate Education Handbooks during the SPP and SEB climate literacy training programme for secondary schools in Abuja.

ABUJA/Nigeria: The Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP), in partnership with the Secondary Education Board (SEB), Abuja, is set to host a two-day interactive climate education programme for teachers and students drawn from 40 secondary schools across the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

The training, scheduled for March 3 and 4, 2026, is designed to strengthen climate literacy among educators and inspire students to take active roles in environmental advocacy.

The initiative will deploy the Climate Education Handbook developed by SPP with support from the University of Bristol. The resource is expected to provide participating teachers with practical tools to integrate climate education into existing classroom instruction, while encouraging students to embrace sustainable practices and leadership roles in climate action.

Organisers say the programme will also focus on strengthening climate clubs within schools as a means of sustaining student engagement and promoting environmental responsibility beyond the classroom.

SPP, a not-for-profit organisation known for its advocacy in climate policy in Nigeria, has identified education as a critical pathway for fostering long-term environmental awareness and behavioural change among young people

Speaking ahead of the event, Senior Policy Analyst at SPP, Mr. Nnaemeka Oruh, underscored the importance of engaging young people early in climate conversations.

“As climate change continues to shape the future of our planet, young people are being called to lead the way,” he said. “We believe these conversations must not be limited to policy spaces but taken to the grassroots. Being informed is the first step to building capacity, and our goal is to take climate knowledge directly into classrooms and empower students to become solution-driven leaders in their communities.”

The Climate Education Handbook, developed as a long-term teaching resource aligned with existing curricula, is intended to equip teachers with the confidence and knowledge to deliver lessons on climate science and sustainable living.

Through this institutional approach to climate education, SPP aims to nurture a generation of environmentally conscious citizens capable of contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s climate goals.
