Stamp Duties, Capital Gain Taxes Described As High Yielding Revenue Sources

ASABA/Nigeria: Stamp Duties and Capital Gains taxes have been described as potential high yielding revenue sources for the Delta State Government, if explored diligently and professionally.

Speaking in Warri while declaring open a one day training programme for revenue officers in the Stamp Duties and Capital Gains Tax Division of the revenue service, Chairman, Delta State Internal Revenue Service, Sir Monday Onyeme, emphasised the importance of capacity building for staff as a vehicle for developing competent work force that would enhance the Revenue Services’s aggressive tax agenda.

While urging participants to take the training seriously and share the knowledge gained with colleagues, the chairman, who was represented by a member of the governing board of the Service, Mr. Daniel Iwebuke, explained that the training was part of a continuous process of building the staff capacity in order to enhance the revenue generation capacity of the service through Stamp Duties and Capacity Gains taxes.

The training was organised by the State Revenue Service in conjunction with Perspector- Watts Consulting Limited.

In his remarks, the Managing Partner of PERSPECTOR – WATTS Consulting and former Chairman of Akwa – Ibom State Internal Revenue Service,  Mr Esien Ukorebi, noted that the Stamp Duty laws being operated by Delta State were obsolete, adding that  his Company would assist in upgrading and domesticating the Federal Stamp Duties Act as well as expand the scope of operations of Stamp Duties and Capital Gain tax collection in the state.

He noted that the training for front-line stamp duty staff was one of many engagements with staff that had been scheduled to enhance greater revenue generation in the state.
