Dr Ben Nkechika, DG/CEO of the commission of  Delta State Contributory Health Commission

ASABA/Nigeria: The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Delta State Chapter, has called on the Delta State Contributory Health Commission to step-up the benefit package for health care in the state health contributory scheme.

The call was made by the Chairman of the Delta Chapter of NMA, Dr Omo Ekanem during an interview session at the head office of the association in Asaba.

Speaking on the successes of the scheme, Dr Ekanem said that the DSCHC was doing very well in its mandate and that doctors in general had accepted the Scheme, adding however said that there was need to step up and expand.

‘The rich and comfortable also have health challenges that put strain on their finances, for which they would have appreciated if the scheme had covered such. For instance, a doctor who has kidney failure or renal challenges have to go for dialysis, and at a point needs renal transplant. That is a big challenge for him because his salary at that level cannot afford such health care,’ he said.

He further said that DSCHC should upgrade with a comprehensive package that could accommodate all health care for individuals that could afford it.

He commended the DG/CEO of the commission, Dr Ben Nkechika, saying, ‘Whenever we call out to him, he listens, Dr Nkechika always takes his time to explain matters to the association.’

The Delta State Contributory Health Commission is presently interviewing stakeholders in the state health contributory scheme on how to improve health care services and achieve greater success in universal health coverage.
