ASABA/Nigeria: A fresh political disagreement has emerged over the Otovwodo and Uvwie flyover projects in Delta State, with the Global Initiative Support Group for Sheriff 2027 accusing former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, of failing to appreciate infrastructure projects it says have improved transportation and economic activities in Delta Central Senatorial District.
The group’s chairman, Chief Josiah Ntekume, made the remarks in a statement issued in response to comments by Omo-Agege’s media team, which had criticised the flyover projects and questioned their priority.
Ntekume argued that the Otovwodo and Uvwie flyovers were conceived to address long-standing traffic congestion, improve road safety and enhance commercial activities in Effurun, Ughelli and surrounding communities, maintaining that the projects have delivered tangible benefits to residents, motorists and businesses.
He said it was surprising that a politician seeking to represent Delta Central in the Senate would publicly criticise major infrastructure located within the district, insisting that the projects reflect the development aspirations of the people.
According to him, the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has continued to invest in roads, bridges and other public infrastructure across the state under the MORE Agenda while also implementing programmes in healthcare, education, agriculture, youth empowerment and security.
Ntekume also rejected suggestions that President Bola Tinubu had condemned the flyover projects, maintaining that recent comments by the President on infrastructure priorities had been misconstrued and did not specifically refer to Delta State or the projects executed by the state government.
He further contended that the flyovers have eased traffic, reduced travel time and improved the movement of goods and services within parts of Delta Central, adding that many road users now experience smoother access through areas previously known for heavy congestion.
The support group chairman described attempts to portray the projects as misplaced priorities as a political position that does not reflect the experiences of many residents who make use of the infrastructure daily.
Ntekume said Governor Oborevwori’s development record should be assessed in its entirety, arguing that infrastructure delivery has progressed alongside investments in other sectors considered critical to the welfare of the people.
He called on residents of Delta Central to evaluate the positions of political actors on issues affecting the district as preparations begin for the 2027 general elections.
Omo-Agege’s media team had earlier criticised the Otovwodo and Uvwie flyover projects, arguing that the state government should have prioritised other areas of development. The latest statement by the support group adds another dimension to the growing political debate over infrastructure spending and development priorities in Delta State ahead of the 2027 polls.
