Talented Nigerian Swimmer Pleads for Backing from Oborivwori and UNIPORT to Achieve Olympic Aspirations

OBIARUKU/Nigeria: Miss Okpochini Deborah Nwabuogor, a promising young swimmer from Nigeria, has made a heartfelt appeal to the University of Port Harcourt Authority and the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, to help her achieve her dream of representing her country at the upcoming 2024 Olympics.

Having recently competed in the National University Games on behalf of the University of Port Harcourt, Miss Okpochini showcased her remarkable talent by emerging as the first-place winner in the 100m freestyle event, clocking an impressive time of 59:90. This achievement earned her a spot to compete in the esteemed World University Games, scheduled to commence on July 25 in China.

Expressing her excitement and determination, Miss Okpochini highlighted her status as the sole female qualifier for the World University Games. She emphasized her eagerness to seize this opportunity and secure a chance to participate in the Olympics next year. She stated, “I’m the only female that qualifies for the game (World University Games), and if I’m opportune to go, I will qualify for the Olympics next year.”

Unfortunately, Miss Okpochini’s cherished dream hangs in the balance as her university faces financial constraints. With a required sponsorship sum of N3.5 million, her university is unable to support her participation in the Games. Although she has acquired the necessary travel documents, her inability to secure the necessary funds threatens to shatter her aspirations.

During the last National University Games (NUGA) in 2022, Miss Okpochini represented the University of Port Harcourt, showcasing her exceptional talent in swimming. Her remarkable performance and subsequent qualification for the World University Games attest to her dedication and potential as an athlete.

With her Olympic dream within reach, Miss Okpochini’s plea for support serves as a reminder of the importance of nurturing and uplifting young talents in Nigeria. The University of Port Harcourt Authority and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori now face a critical decision: whether to rally behind this aspiring swimmer and ensure she gets the opportunity to represent her country on the global stage or risk seeing her potential go unrealized.
