LAGOS/Nigeria: A fatal tanker accident along Ekoro Road in Abule Egba, Lagos, has claimed the life of an adult woman and left a teenager injured, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.
Permanent Secretary of the agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said emergency responders received distress calls through the state’s 767 and 112 toll-free lines at about 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, prompting the activation of the state’s Emergency Response Plans from the Igando base along Igando–LASU Road.
He explained that when officials arrived at the scene at approximately 8:04 p.m., they found a tanker carrying about 15,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit involved in a lone accident. Preliminary findings indicated the vehicle suffered a mechanical fault, lost control, struck a bystander and rammed into a roadside shop. The tanker driver was not found at the scene.
Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed that the female bystander died from injuries sustained in the crash, while a teenage girl, estimated to be about 15 years old, was trapped in the wreckage. The teenager was rescued by emergency personnel and handed over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service for treatment before being transferred to a hospital.
He added that the body of the deceased was recovered and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further processing, while traffic control measures were immediately implemented to prevent secondary accidents.
Agencies present at the scene included the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps. Authorities confirmed that both the tanker and the affected roadside structure sustained significant damage.
