BONNY/Nigeria: A significant breakthrough in the fight against crude oil theft was achieved over the weekend, as an illegal crude oil loading point was uncovered at the Cawthorne Channel 1 Flowstation in Rivers State.
The station, located in the Bonny area and operated by Sahara Energy, was previously managed by Eroton Exploration and Production Company Limited.
An oil barge identified as AGS 01 and an unnamed wooden boat used in the illegal operation was reportedly impounded. While no security agency or private surveillance firm has officially claimed responsibility, investigations revealed that the discovery was made by Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL), chaired by Chief Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo.
According to military sources, Tantita operatives, during a routine patrol, stumbled upon the illegal activities near the flowstation. They were alerted to the scene by the unusual gathering of individuals involved in the oil theft.
Although officials from TSSNL were unavailable to comment on the matter at press time, video evidence from the site showed Tantita operatives inspecting the seized barge, wooden boat, and a tugboat named MV AMS 02. A hose was observed being used to siphon crude oil from the barge into the wooden boat.
The identities of the individuals involved in the illegal operation remain unknown, but TSSNL officials were seen ordering the oil thieves to leave the area.
Industry stakeholders have expressed shock over the discovery, especially considering the presence of military personnel at the flowstation. One industry insider raised concerns, questioning how such an operation could take place under the watch of security forces. “The sight of a wooden boat loaded with crude oil raises serious questions about the involvement of military personnel and possibly officials from the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL),” the source stated.
The insider went on to ask whether the presence of TSSNL operatives on the seized equipment signaled their complicity or another successful operation in their ongoing fight against oil theft.
“If this is indeed another achievement by Tantita, their efforts deserve recognition from both the government and the public.”
Attempts to reach key officials of TSSNL for confirmation were unsuccessful. The company’s Managing Director, Engineer Keston Pondi, and Executive Director of Operations/Technical Services, Captain Warredi Enisuoh, did not respond to calls or messages seeking comment.
