ABEOKUTA/Nigeria: The traditional rulers of Ogun State, have called on the Federal Government to abolish the local government system as the third tier of government.
The Obas who spoke under the auspices for the Progressive Obas Forum, Ogun Central, requested that the federal government should replace the LGs Chairmen with traditional rulers in a bid to harness the traditional institution, achieve sustainable democracy and development in the country.[yop_poll id=”-3″]
Speaking at an event on ‘Good governance in Ogun State’ with the theme ; ‘Larger Scale of Vision and Dream as a legacy beyond 2019 till 2050’,the forum chairman, Oba Abdukfatai Akorede Akamo, noted that the country has unacknowledged the role of the traditional institutions in democracy and development of the country.
He said, “For democracy to be sustainable in modern Nigeria and especially Ogun State, key stakeholders including the traditional institutions must be ready to perform their roles while not relegating same to politicians and this is the reason for our gathering today.”
Applauding the Governor of the state, Ibikunle Amosun, he said, “Ogun State has witnessed tremendous progress across the three senatorial districts in the last seven years… Foremost is the security architecture of the state which the government has addressed head-on. The state is now referred as one of the best state that are self-sustaining and has been rated as the second most viable state in the federation in terms of fiscal sustainability in the 2017 Budget report.
“The recently introduced African Drum Festival has again redefined the place of Ogun State in the global map with its attendant economic potential while the feat achieved in the agricultural sector with the introduction of MITROS rice into the market will remain indelible in the history of the state.
He however said the burden of continuity is not only on the government and it’s functionaries neither should it be left on the hands of the politicians adding that the forum is leading a crusade of good governance in Ogun State beyond 2019 by the adoption of 2050 agenda for the state.
Delivering his keynote address, Prof. Olatunji Odedeyi, stressed the need for the people to show willingness towards the sustainability of the SDG’s in the state.
He says the dream of the state enjoying good governance beyond 2019 till 2050 is achievable if successive governments key into the plans of the government.
