ABUJA/Nigeria: The Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja adjourned the hearing in the petition of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s election on Tuesday.
The adjournment was due to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) alleged refusal to provide important electoral materials to Atiku.
The court postponed the hearing until June 7th, pending INEC’s response to Atiku and the People’s Democratic Party’s request for document supply. During Tuesday’s proceedings, Eyitayo Jegede, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria SAN, sought to submit forms EC8A from 10 Local Government Areas of Kogi State to establish the petition against Tinubu.
The court noted that submitting such sensitive exhibits in pieces would not be helpful, especially in the areas of marking and numbering them. Jegede blamed INEC for deliberately refusing to supply his client with vital documents and stated that Atiku had paid N6M for the certified true copy of the exhibits.
The court granted a 24-hour adjournment to enable Jegede to approach INEC to provide the necessary documents.
The matter was adjourned until today, June 7th, and no objections were raised by counsel to respondents, INEC, Tinubu, and the All Progressives Congress APC.
