AWKA/Nigeria: Tragedy struck on Thursday morning along the Owerri–Onitsha Road in Anambra State when a trailer’s container fell on a commercial tricycle, killing two people on the spot.
Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mrs. Bridget Asekhauno, said the crash occurred around 8:20 a.m. and was caused by a failed portion of the road.
“The fatal crash involved two unidentified drivers — one operating a red tricycle with no registration number and a trailer, also without a registration number,” Asekhauno said. “Eyewitnesses reported that the accident occurred when the trailer’s container toppled due to a poorly maintained section of the road, crushing the tricycle beneath it.”
According to the FRSC, four male occupants were involved in the crash, with two confirmed dead. Rescue efforts were carried out jointly by the FRSC and the police.
“The FRSC tow truck was deployed to lift the container off the tricycle, and the trapped victims were evacuated to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival,” the commander said.
She added that the wreckage had been cleared to restore free traffic flow along the busy route.
Asekhauno urged motorists to drive cautiously, especially on bad portions of the road, and to always observe traffic safety regulations to prevent avoidable loss of lives.
