Abuja/Nigeria: Former Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Ike Uche Secondus emerged as the new National Chairman of the party at the just concluded electoral process of PDP National Convention in Abuja.
According to Barrister Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe , the Executive Assistant to Gov Okowa on Communication, he pulled an overwhelming 2,000 votes to beat his close rival, Prof Tunde Adeniran who got 230 votes while media baron and owner of African Independent Television, Chief Raymond Dokpesi pulled 66 votes.
Secondus is seen by party faithfuls and leaders as a tested and trusted party stakeholder who over the years demonstrated sufficient loyalty to the party; remained focused in joining efforts with other leaders across the six geopolitical zones to build the party and by extension prevented PDP from going into extinction as can be seen from the protracted and delicate national leadership tussle which gave victory to the Senator Ahmed Makarfi led National Caretaker Committee.
Political analysts strongly believe that Secondus is a bridge builder, well grounded in national politics and cannot be easily swayed by sentiments to pervert the cause of justice, equity and good conscience. He is certainly one of the key players in the PDP family and well known to be a master strategist and political tactician of no mean repute.
Accreditation, voting and counting of ballots were conducted in the open and under camera. Candidates and their representatives were on hand as well as officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to witness the electoral process. Local and foreign observers were also present including some members of foreign missions and diplomats. AIT covered the event live to demonstrate to the entire world that the process was indeed free, fair and transparent.
With the emergence of Prince Uche Secondus as PDP National Chairman, the party is back, stronger and better and expected to wrestle power from the All Progressives Congress (APC) come 2019 and ready to rebuild the nation’s crashed economy, wrecked by the APC party and its leaders.
