LAGOS/Nigeria: In a resounding address that resonated with 700 UBA graduate trainees hailing from diverse corners of Africa, Tony O. Elumelu, the Group Chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA), delivered a stirring account of his personal journey and his vision for the future. In his impassioned discourse, Elumelu emphasized the pivotal role of mentorship and excellence, underlining their significance in shaping the next generation of African leaders through the UBA Graduate Trainee Program (GMAP).
As someone who once embarked on his own career as a trainee, Elumelu drew parallels between his early days and the bright minds now joining UBA, highlighting their shared commitment to the pursuit of excellence.
“Some moments resonate as profoundly remarkable in life, where dreams are born from humble beginnings and transformed into extraordinary realities,” Elumelu declared, speaking passionately about the transformative potential of this program.
One key highlight of Elumelu’s address was his enthusiasm for one-on-one induction sessions with the new graduate trainees, a practice he values for its role in building bonds and imparting essential lessons. “Through these personal stories, bonds are forged, and lessons are imparted,” he noted, emphasizing the value of transparency and shared learning.
Elumelu’s ethos of transparency and shared learning closely aligns with UBA’s core values, which emphasize mentorship, growth, and excellence at every stage of one’s career. “It is a vision that has inspired me to create a world-class trainee program, nurturing future leaders who mirror the passion and dedication I demonstrated as a trainee myself,” said Elumelu.
Beyond its commitment to nurturing future leaders, the UBA GMAP is actively addressing critical societal issues. Elumelu outlined three key aspects of the program:
Addressing Unemployment: Elumelu emphasized the program’s crucial role in tackling the pervasive issue of youth unemployment across Africa. By providing tangible job opportunities through GMAP, UBA contributes significantly to the economic growth of the continent.
Investing in Young Africans: UBA’s unwavering commitment to developing and empowering young talent aligns with the pressing need for opportunities in Africa. GMAP identifies and nurtures the potential of young Africans, offering them training, mentorship, and real-world experiences.
Elumelu reiterated UBA’s dedication to youth development, emphasizing the institution’s leadership in fostering innovation, diversity, and inclusivity within the financial sector.
Reflecting on the program’s remarkable success, Elumelu expressed pride in the UBA Executive Management team and gratitude for witnessing the dream of a world-class trainee program come to life. Over 107,000 young Africans applied for the program, with 666 graduates successfully completing the rigorous training.
In his closing remarks, Elumelu urged the new UBA Tribe members to embrace their journey, acknowledging the challenges and triumphs that lie ahead. He assured them of UBA’s unwavering support and empowerment, echoing the mentorship he received that shaped his own path.
Elumelu concluded, “Your dedication, hard work, and pursuit of excellence will shape your future and the future of UBA and the financial industry. Welcome to the beginning of your remarkable journey.”
