CAPE TOWN/South Africa: Wale Tinubu, CON, Group Chief Executive of Oando PLC, has been honoured with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at African Energy Week (AEW) 2025, in recognition of his remarkable leadership and lasting contributions to Africa’s energy sector.
The award, regarded as one of the most coveted distinctions at AEW, is reserved for industry leaders whose vision, resilience, and achievements have left an indelible impact on the continent’s energy landscape. Previous recipients include Professor Benedict Okey Oramah, President of Afreximbank, who received the Mohammed S. Barkindo Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024; H.E. Hage Geingob, former President of Namibia, and H.E. Macky Sall, former President of Senegal, in 2023; and H.E. Bruno Jean Richard Itoua, Minister of Hydrocarbons of the Republic of Congo, in 2022.
In conferring the honour, the African Energy Chamber commended Tinubu for his dedication to advancing Africa’s energy security, his ability to steer Oando through periods of transformation, and his role in showcasing the strength of indigenous companies in driving industrial growth and energy sovereignty across the continent.
From humble beginnings as a local downstream operator, Tinubu has guided Oando into a multinational integrated energy company with a diverse portfolio spanning oil and gas exploration, power, and renewables. His leadership has positioned the company as one of Africa’s foremost energy players and, in the process, highlighted African ambition, resilience, and innovation.
“A firm believer that Africa must harness its abundant resources to chart its own destiny, Wale Tinubu has embodied the spirit of African excellence. His journey demonstrates what is possible with vision, determination, and the right team,” the Chamber said in a statement.
The Lifetime Achievement Award at AEW is widely considered a benchmark of excellence, honouring individuals whose decades-long careers have redefined Africa’s oil, gas, and energy industries. Tinubu’s recognition is seen as a fitting tribute to a leader who has consistently inspired confidence in the continent’s potential and the power of its people.
