KWALE/Nigeria: For many people from Ndokwa communities, the weekend is more than a break from work. It is often a time to return home, reconnect with family, attend ceremonies, visit friends and participate in community life.
From weddings and traditional marriage ceremonies to burials, festivals, age-grade meetings, church activities, community meetings and family gatherings, weekends continue to provide an important rhythm to social life across Ndokwa.
For people living in Asaba, Warri, Lagos, Port Harcourt and other cities, the journey home can sometimes begin as early as Friday. The destination may be a village, family compound or community event, but the purpose is often the same: to reconnect.
The Social Life of the Community
One of the enduring features of life in many Ndokwa communities is the importance attached to relationships. A wedding is rarely only about the couple; it can bring together extended families, friends, neighbours, age groups and people who have not seen one another for months or years.
The same applies to traditional ceremonies. An event may begin as a family occasion but become a wider community gathering, with relatives travelling from different parts of the country and, in some cases, from outside Nigeria.
For younger people, these occasions can provide an opportunity to meet relatives they may know mainly through family stories, photographs or social media.
The Return Home
There is something distinctive about returning home for a weekend: meeting familiar faces, visiting relatives, attending a community event or simply sitting with family members in the compound.
Food is shared. Stories are exchanged. Family matters are discussed. Children play together. Older members of the family catch up on developments. Sometimes, the most important part of the visit is simply being present.

Social occasions provide opportunities for people to express themselves through food, clothing and hospitality. Traditional meals remain important at many ceremonies, while contemporary celebrations increasingly combine local customs with modern event planning.
Young people may arrive in contemporary fashion, document the occasion with smartphones and share photographs instantly, while elders maintain traditional ceremonies and family customs.
Social Media Has Changed the Weekend
A community event no longer necessarily ends when the last guest leaves. Photographs and videos can circulate on WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and other platforms within minutes, allowing people far away to participate virtually.
This creates opportunities for communities to showcase culture, events, people and achievements, but it also creates a responsibility to respect privacy and obtain appropriate permission before publishing images or videos of private family moments.
Keeping the Connection Alive
The value of weekend homecoming is ultimately about maintaining relationships. Work, business, school and migration can keep family members apart for long periods, and regular visits home provide an opportunity to maintain those connections.
For communities experiencing migration of young people to larger cities, that connection may become even more important. A young person who regularly returns home is more likely to remain familiar with the community’s people, history, traditions and challenges.
The Ndokwa weekend homecoming is therefore more than travelling from the city to the village. It is about family, friendship, community, culture and maintaining a sense of belonging in a rapidly changing world.
As another weekend begins, many people will make that familiar journey home. Sometimes, going home is itself a way of staying connected.
