Woman Abandons Newborn in Nylon Bag, Flees After Failed Infanticide in Delta

EBEDEI/Nigeria: Residents of Obi-Iloh in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State were thrown into shock after a young woman, identified as Sarah Osawe, allegedly abandoned her newborn baby in a nylon bag and attempted to dispose of the infant near River Road.

The incident, which took place on Thursday, March 13, 2025, under the cover of darkness, was thwarted when locals caught her in the act, forcing her to flee the community.

Sources in the area revealed that Osawe had been pregnant but was unsure of the child’s paternity. In an apparent attempt to terminate the pregnancy, she reportedly took some medication, but the baby was delivered prematurely at seven months. Rather than seek medical assistance, she allegedly wrapped the newborn in a nylon bag and proceeded to dump the child near the river.

Eyewitnesses who spotted her suspicious movements raised an alarm, drawing the attention of community members. As they confronted her, Osawe abandoned the baby and took to her heels. Attempts to apprehend her proved futile as she escaped before security operatives could intervene.

The abandoned baby was rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel confirmed the infant was alive but in critical condition. Authorities have since launched a manhunt for Osawe, urging anyone with information about her whereabouts to report to the nearest police station.

The shocking incident has sparked outrage in the community, with residents calling for stricter measures to prevent similar acts of child endangerment. Many have also emphasized the need for increased awareness on proper pregnancy care and available social welfare support to prevent desperate actions by expectant mothers.
