ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State police command says the force is investigating a 24 year old teacher suspected to have manhandle a pupil at a day care facility prior to the sudden death of the minor.
The Commissioner of Police Mr. Mohammed Ari, disclosed this at the police headquarters in Asaba, during a joint briefing with the State Commissioner for Information Mr. Charlse Aniagwu.
The parents of the child are holding the teacher and the school proprietress responsible for the death of their one year and seven month old boy.
Mother of the infant Gift Ohanezeze, narrated how her little child returned from school with bruises and was rushed to the hospital where he suffered hypertension and fell into a coma before his demise.
“Pupils came out to say: ‘mummy Obi, our Big mummy and uncle and one aunty tied Obinna with an hanky; hand and leg and were flogging him like a goat’.
“I asked, who is Big mummy? They pointed at the proprietress.”
Delta State Commissioner of Police Mohammed Ari, who gave details of the events surrounding the child’s passing said the police had opened an investigation into the matter.
“At the end of the day, the case would be charged appropriately to court. For now, I want to charge all members of the public to exercise restraint.”
The State Commissioner for Information Mr. Charles Aniagwu, said the state government had paid a condolence visit to the family of the infant alleged to have been maltreated at a private school in the state stressing the government would monitor the case to ensure family of the victim get justice.
“The wife of the Governor. (Edith Okowa), had lead a team to visit this particular home that many people are calling a school, and also the mother of the victim. We will follow this matter to its logical conclusion.”
The suspect Emeka Joshua, a son of the proprietress who double as teacher in the school, explained that he disciplined the child who he alleged had injured another kid in class.
“He pushed another child down, he hit his head.”
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner for Primary Education Chief Chika Ossai, had led ministry officials to seal the premises of Arise and Shine Day Care, where infant Obinna had spent his last active days.
