Women in Delta State Demand End to Gender Bias, As They Celebrate 2022 International Women’s Day

ASABA/Nigeria: Women in Delta State have called for an end to all forms of gender bias affecting the even development of the folk in relation to their male counterparts.

They stated this during a rally in Asaba, participated by delegates of the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in collaboration with female non-governmental organizations, to celebrate the 2022 International Women’s Day.

The rally was held with the theme: Break the Bias.

That was the mood of the peaceful rally as women marched through major streets including the busy Ogbogonogo market and terminated their walk at the Government House.

The state Commissioner for Women Affairs Mrs. Flora Alatan, spoke on women empowerment programs of the administration and the importance of the celebration.

“In 2022, (GEST) the Girl Child Empowerment; we have a thousand two hundred that are penciled down for empowerment. Ministry of Women Affairs, we have seven hundred and fifty (750) pencilled. The message for our governor is, we just come to tell him, ‘thank you.’”

The Chairperson Family Value Renaissance Tina Ucha, and her counterpart in the state Chapter of the National Association of Women Journalists NAWOJ, Pat Gbemudu, supported the agenda.

“Say no to all the inequality going on in the country against the Nigerian women.”

“We are not here saying we want to take over, but we are here saying we are equally human beings.

The State Director of Orientation, Stella Macaulay and the Chairperson of FIDA Stella Maris, appealed for gender friendly legislations and cooperation among women.

“A couple of days back, the National Assembly threw out clauses that would otherwise have bettered the lot of women. If we stand here to count other biases we will not leave here.”

“So I implore all women, support your fellow woman.”

Receiving the women at the Government House, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, represented by the Chief of Staff Ovie Agas, noted the administration had pursued gender friendly policies.

“We have about seven women in the State Executive Council. If you are familiar with our wealth creation programs; in those programs the governor insists that a certain percentage must be kept for our women.”

Physically challenged women also took part in the rally.
