Workshop on Carbon Emission Reduction Strategies Held in Sabongari, Kaduna

KADUNA/Nigeria: Connected Advocacy held a capacity-building workshop in Sabongari, Kaduna Local Government, focused on carbon emission reduction strategies. The event, part of the organization’s efforts to localize Nigeria’s net-zero commitment, was disclosed by Prince Israel Orekha, Executive Director of Connected Advocacy, during a press briefing in Lagos on Friday.

In his welcome address, Hon. Dr. Engr. Ibrahim Mohammed, Chairman of Sabongari LGA, represented by Hon. Umar Shehu, praised Connected Advocacy for their dedication to climate education. Shehu highlighted the severe consequences of a depleted ozone layer and emphasized the LGA’s commitment to Nigeria’s net-zero goals. “This climate action plan will provide us with a roadmap for reducing emissions and building a more sustainable future for our community,” Shehu said.

Orekha’s presentation detailed the pressing issue of climate change in Sabongari, outlining causes, effects, and Nigeria’s net-zero commitment. He emphasized the critical role of local governments due to their close ties with communities and their understanding of local challenges. Key points in his address included community engagement, data-driven decision-making, policy implementation, and integrating mitigation and adaptation strategies.

Highlighting the importance of data-driven analysis and collaboration, Orekha noted that energy poverty remains a significant challenge in northern Nigeria. He advocated for the deployment of renewable energy in rural areas to aid global carbon mitigation efforts.

Participants at the workshop identified major challenges, such as plastic bag usage and firewood burning, and discussed innovative solutions for emission reduction. This engagement session initiated the development of an LGA-specific climate action plan, outlining mitigation and adaptation strategies, community engagement, and capacity-building initiatives.

Connected Advocacy’s call to action underscored the urgency of developing robust policies and fostering collaborations. The organization emphasized that local governments are pivotal in the fight against climate change, and there is no time to waste.

The event marked a significant step in empowering local government officials with the knowledge and tools to drive grassroots climate action. As the seminar concluded, attendees left with a heightened sense of urgency and commitment, equipped with strategies to mitigate climate change impacts and achieve net-zero emissions.
