THE Chairman of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Delta State Council, Comrade Ifeanyi Obi has said peace has returned to Ika South branches of the union and all machinery are in motion for election to be conducted in the area.
Speaking with reporters in Asaba, Comrade Obi stated that elections to fill vacant positions in the branches would be held in the next couple of days disclosing that elections would have been held in the branches but there are security reports on some of the members of the Union.
He thanked Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan for his understanding while the crisis lasted, assuring that the leadership of NURTW is committed to ensuring that no member of the Union engages in any action that would be against the peace and security agenda of Governor Uduaghan’s administration.
“Peace has returned to Ika south and we have concluded plans for elections, we are calling on our members who are qualified to pick their nomination forms and campaign for the election, nobody should engage in any action that will not encourage peace because, during the crisis that rocked our union in that area, it affected all of us and we felt very bad because our Governor is a peaceful man who wants a peaceful Delta for his programmes to succeed,” Comrade Obi said.
On those who were involved in the crisis, he stated, “there is no doubt that our members were involved, security operatives are working because, nobody should use the name of the Union to do bad thing, members of NURTW are law abiding citizens and anybody who engages in any action that is against the peace and progress of the union and the state would be appropriately sanctioned.”
“We thank our Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan for contributing to the peace process in our union, we are also grateful to security agencies, kings, politicians and elders for working for peace to be in our union, we are praying that nobody should stay outside and cause trouble for us because, we are united and believe that there is only one National Union,” Comrade Obi said.
The NURTW helmsman stated that those who are interested in holding offices in the union should be ready for election because the era where people enter positions based on their might is over, adding that members of the Union would be allowed to choose through the ballot box who will lead them.
He assured that there would be no security threat as a result of the elections as those who have security issues would know what to do in the interest of the union.
