Delta State Deputy Governor Calls for Strident Measures to Combat Drug Abuse

ASABA/Nigeria: In a bid to address the growing concern of drug abuse in the country, the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, has emphasized the need for stringent measures to tackle the issue. Sir Onyeme made this call on Tuesday during a courtesy visit from the State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Barr. John Omotosho Tunde, at his office in the Government House, Asaba.

Highlighting the strong correlation between drug abuse and criminality, the Deputy Governor expressed his belief that effectively curbing drug abuse would significantly reduce crime rates in society. He commended the NDLEA officials for their proactive efforts in combating drug abuse, which have contributed to the state’s low prevalence of criminal activities.

“I want to specially thank the NDLEA for all that you are doing for humanity and all that you do to reduce the incidence of drug abuse and related crimes in Delta State,” Sir Onyeme expressed his gratitude.

“The work that you do is very important to us because of the relationship between drug abuse and crime. Where there is a high incidence of drug abuse, the rate of crime is high. It is good that the NDLEA has greatly tackled drug abuse in our state, but you should not rest on your oars,” he added.

Assuring the NDLEA of the administration’s support, Sir Onyeme stated that the government, under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, would continue to partner with the agency and other organizations working towards creating a better society.

“I know that you will meet with our Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori. Be rest assured that our administration will partner with you as we will collaborate with any agency, organization, or individual who is working for the good of our people,” he affirmed.

During the courtesy visit, Barr. John briefed the Deputy Governor and other attendees, including the Deputy Chief of Staff, Government House, Asaba, Sir Christopher Osakwe, about the NDLEA’s activities in the state.
