Delta State Urges Residents in Flood-Prone Areas to Seek Higher Ground as Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam Releases Water into Niger and Benue Rivers

ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Government has issued a stern call to residents inhabiting low-lying and flood-prone regions, urging them to relocate to higher ground in anticipation of an imminent flood. The advisory comes in response to the release of water from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam into the Rivers Niger and Benue.

In an official statement in Asaba, Sir Festus Ahon, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, highlighted the government’s concern for the safety of citizens residing in areas susceptible to flooding. This concern arises considering prior warnings issued by the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA).

It stated that Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has taken decisive action in the face of the impending flood, approving the establishment of a 14-member Flood Disaster Management Committee. The committee will be led by Dr. Kingsley Emu, Secretary to the State Government, and is tasked with devising strategies to mitigate the anticipated challenges posed by the approaching flood.

The statement outlined the committee’s pivotal responsibilities, encompassing extensive public awareness campaigns regarding the looming flood. Additionally, the committee will formulate suitable preventive measures and manage the aftermath of flooding, including addressing displacement issues and proposing methods for providing relief materials to affected individuals.

It  emphasised the reasons behind the impending flood, noting, “The Delta State Government has been informed that the authorities of Lagdo Dam in Cameroon would be releasing modulated amounts of water into the River Benue and River Niger due to flooding caused by torrential rainfall.”

The government assured citizens that the state government is committed to supporting those forced to evacuate their homes due to rising water levels caused by the overflow of the River Benue and River Niger. It underscored Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s swift action in establishing the Flood Disaster Management Committee to ensure the welfare of displaced individuals through the setup of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in proximity to affected areas.

For individuals requiring government assistance due to the impending flood, Ahon provided two contact numbers: 08064137841 and 08037200696. This move aims to streamline intervention efforts and offer support to those facing the challenges of flooding.
