Delta State Ministry of Justice Launches Special Units to Combat Illegal Migration and Sexual Abuse

ASABA/Nigeria: In response to the escalating cases of illegal migration, sexual abuse, and child rape in Delta State and beyond, the Delta State Ministry of Justice has taken a decisive step by establishing two specialized units to focus on prosecuting offenders. Permanent Secretary and Solicitor-General, Omamuzo Erebe, reiterated the pressing need to curb these social menaces during a courtesy visit by the Chief Executive Officer of Delta State Orientation Bureau, Dr. Wilfred Latimore Oghenesivbe.

Erebe emphasized the severity of the situation, noting, “The rising cases of child sexual abuse, rape, and defilements are becoming alarming. Apart from social deviants, some biological fathers who ought to protect their girl child and instill moral values are involved in child rape.” He further disclosed that the ministry is actively handling multifaceted criminal cases related to child sexual abuse, defilements, illegal human trafficking, and forced labor.

To combat these issues, Erebe disclosed that two special units have been established, one dedicated to sexual abuse and another to illegal migration. He assured that the state governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, is committed to introducing reforms and policies aimed at curbing these menaces. Erebe called on stakeholders at various levels to collaborate with the State government through the Orientation Bureau to create awareness about the dangers and legal implications of human trafficking, rape, and drug abuse.

During the meeting, Erebe commended the Delta State Orientation Bureau, especially its new CEO, Dr. Oghenesivbe, describing him as a communication strategist par excellence and a good ambassador of the Governor’s MORE Agenda. He expressed confidence that, under Dr. Oghenesivbe’s leadership, the Bureau would achieve significant results in effective sensitization and media campaigns against drug abuse, rape, and illegal migration in the state.

Erebe stated, “This visit is timely, and we are ready to collaborate with Delta State Orientation Bureau to curb the menace of child defilement, rape, drug abuse, and illegal migration. As you sensitize the people, we shall continue to prosecute offenders and keep them away from responsible citizens.”

In response, Dr. Oghenesivbe highlighted the importance of collaboration and drew attention to some Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) engaging in campaigns without involving the State Orientation Bureau. He affirmed the Bureau’s willingness to partner with various entities but stressed the importance of its inclusion in campaigns and sensitization programs within Delta State.

The meeting, attended by heads of various legal units of the Delta State Ministry of Justice and management staff of Delta State Orientation Bureau, aimed to foster collaboration and draw on the wealth of experience of the Permanent Secretary in addressing the pressing challenges faced by the state.
