Delta Speaker Hails Debate Champions, Says Victory Brings Global Honour to State

Delta State Students , who represented Nigeria, World School Debate Championship held in Doha, Qatar

ASABA/Nigeria: Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, has described the victory of Delta State students at the World School Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar, as a moment of immense pride for the government and people of the state.

Reacting to the news of Nigeria’s emergence as champions after defeating teams from the State of Chicago, USA, and host nation Qatar, Guwor said the achievement was both exceptional and deeply significant for Delta State and Nigeria as a whole.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke, the Speaker applauded the brilliant team of students, all from Delta State, who proudly flew the Nigerian flag at the global stage.

“These students have proven that with preparation, discipline, and vision, young Nigerians can stand tall and win on the world stage,” Guwor said. “Their success reflects not only their intellectual brilliance and oratory skills but also the strength and quality of education in Delta State.”

On behalf of the Delta State House of Assembly, the Speaker congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and all Nigerians on the landmark victory, which he described as a beacon of hope and inspiration for the nation’s youth.

He said the House eagerly looks forward to receiving the debate team back in Delta State and commended them as ambassadors of excellence and determination.

Guwor assured that the State Assembly remains committed to supporting policies and initiatives that enhance education, youth development, and the pursuit of excellence.

The victorious team comprised Master Wisdom Chukwuma (Government College, Ughelli), Otorvo Uyoyou (Alegbo Secondary School, Effurun), Abraham Ihonor (Okpaka Secondary School, Okpaka), Ekhamateh Splendour (Government Model Secondary School, Asaba), and Alika Daniel (Utagba-Ogbe Grammar School, Kwale).

The students were led to Qatar by Hon. Samuel Mariere, Chairman of the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). They secured a 2–1 win over host country Qatar in the first round and delivered a flawless 3–0 performance in the final against the State of Chicago, earning a 5–1 aggregate score to become world champions.
